Checkmate by White Night – the Twinpalms 7th Anniversary Party
There can be little doubt that the high season is just around the corner when Phuket’s style wars break out once again. Uber-stylish resorts and hotels start laying on magnificent parties, wine dinners and happenings, peopled certainly by the beautiful, and quite often by the damned, in a pyrotechnic race to ‘out-cool’ each other. The glitterati and obliteratti maraud around the island in their convertibles from one superb evening’s entertainment to the next, all seeking to see and be seen at the most fashionable gathering and gnashing their super white Brite Smiles if they happen to miss out on a scene that “dahling just had to be seen”.
Over at Surin Beach, the Twinpalms Resort somehow seems to effortlessly rise above such crass social climbing and continues to traverse Phuket’s trendy heaven on a glorious trajectory of its own, high above the scrabbling arrive-ists and wannabes.
Since its inception seven years ago, Twinpalms has continued to set the standard for elegance, taste and the best goddamned parties Phuket has ever seen and the night of Saturday September 24th this year was no exception.
Every great party needs a reason for being and this evening’s was to celebrate the seventh anniversary of the opening of Phuket’s very own epicenter of chic….Twinpalms. Equally a great location is part of the formula and the resort’s Catch Beach Club hard on the sands of Surin Beach is second to none in this department. But in addition to these more obvious qualities of a great party, there’s also the need for that essential magic ingredient that raises your common or garden tropical island beach thrash into the pantheon of “nights you’ll never forget” and this night had that magic in spades.
A record crowd rocked up to Catch Beach Club this year and Twinpalm’s urbane General Manager Olivier Gibaud told us that they lost count somewhere over the 2,500 mark! These beautiful and occasionally ugly acolytes clad in white (plus the occasional dyslexic Blackamore who couldn’t read the invitation) turned up to dance the night away to the acid-trance and techno- house spins, while the seafood buffet groaned under the weight of cold water oysters and hot plakapong.
There were bevies of the resort’s beautiful staff all tonsured in Lady GaGa-lookalike silver blonde wigs attending to overweight property developers fugging in a sea of personal perspiration. There were vodka shooters and fireworks, hot panted bar top dancers and a Jack Nicholson lookalike staggering about. There were gorgeously slim tanned girls getting their spiked heels stuck in the cracks in the timber decking around the outdoor bar and there was just about everybody you’ve ever met or will ever want to meet in Phuket throwing themselves about until four in the morning with both gay and straight abandon.
It was, in short, a night to remember and if indeed I could recall any more of the later evening’s activities, this article wouldn’t have to stop here.
