Phuket is witnessing an accelerating sophistication in the range and quality of wines on offer and delightful wine dinners during which they are served. Here are three of the finest locations to sample wine dinners.
The Evason Six Senses in Rawai
The Evason Six Senses Resort (firstname.lastname@example.org) on Chalong Beach believes that great settings and creative themes are essential ingredients for great wine drinking experiences.
They conduct weekly wine tastings and every property in the group has its own resident sommelier as well as cellars and tasting rooms. The wine dinners they stage are always in lovely surroundings and of course that is an essential part of the ultimate wining and dining experience.
The central role that wine plays in the culture of the stylish Evason Six Sense’s empire is a reflection of the passion of its owners Sonu and Eva Shivdasani. They agree that the opportunities that Phuket offers to pair food and wine with glorious settings and themes like music, art and film, is second to none. In the past they featured a Francis Ford Coppola wine night, with a representative from their Californian vineyard presenting the wines and the Godfather movie on a huge screen above the infinity pool. More recently they paired Alsace wines with local street-style Thai food to great fanfare and appreciation.
The Baan Rim Pa Group
With three award-winning restaurants under its wing the Baan Rim Pa Group (www.baanrimpa.com) has recognized the immense marketing attraction of coupling wine and food in themed dinners.
“We stage wine dinners in all of our restaurants from time to time. They are very popular with the local expat residents as well as many tourists who are pleased to find there are special dinners available to them in which world class wines are featured,” says Sue Ultmann the Director Marketing Communications.
“We have run several types of dinner over the years. At any particular event, we might feature different Phuket wine importers such as Envision, the Andaman Wine Club, or Wine Connection, as well as international wine makers who come to Phuket to promote their wines. We might feature a particular country, or a specific varietal such as Pinot Noir, or we might follow a specific theme like biodynamic wines, or wines that complement spicy Thai food.
Sue Ultman agrees that location is an essential part of the ultimate wine dinner: “At Da Maurizio, Joe’s Downstairs or Baan Rim Pa, we are able to combine food, wine and an ocean-side location which few destinations can match”.
Mom Tri’s Villa Royale
Mom Tri’s Villa Royale is a creation of renowned artist and architect Mom Luang Tridhosyuth Devakul, better known simply as Mom Tri, a descendant of the King Mongkut Rama IV. Mom Tri opened his private summer home as a boutique resort on the headland overlooking Kata Beach ten years ago, to provide guests with a truly royal experience. Mom Tri’s own passion for fine dining and wines was then infused into the culture of all the Group’s activities.
The Group (www.villaroyalephuket. com) has its own Wine Director Georges Civet who working with the kitchen team has produced some of the most sensational wine dinners on the island. For example MomTri’s hosted an exclusive wine dinner featuring wines from Chateau Los Boldos, a leading wine producer from Chile located at the foot of the Andes in the Rapel Valley. Master Chef Jean-Noël Lumineau created the menu for this 5-course gourmet dinner which was unsurprisingly sold out.
Whatever the cost, whatever the theme, the boom in Phuket’s love affair with wine and wine dinners shows no sign of abating.
We’ll drink to that!
