Rhapsody in Blue!

It was a lovely Green Season evening when we arrived at the welcoming gates and wonderful grounds of the elegant Blue Elephant restaurant and cooking school in Phuket Town to savor their new set-menu additions to their already world-famous selection of cuisine.

Phuket’s very own strangely-colored Elephant keeps on producing cuisine and dining like no other and this evening’s experience was a perfect example. It’s a unique temple of gastronomy and good taste….in every sense.

The Blue Elephant is the memorable name of the collection of famous restaurants that for the past 36 years has served sensational Royal Thai Cuisine worldwide, from London to Paris to Brussels to Bangkok and Phuket. Karl and Nooror Somany Steppe have pioneered Thai culture and cuisine throughout their global chain of Blue Elephant restaurants and gained a well-deserved global reputation for elegance and excellence in the process.

The Phuket Town Blue Elephant is certainly easy to locate, standing in stately majesty on Krabi Road at the site of the famous Phra Pitak Chinpracha Mansion. This grand Sino-Portuguese residence was built in 1903 by Tan Ma Sieng, a Chinese Tin Baron and is a splendid building displaying a combination of European and Chinese styles. 

Kim Steppe, the charming son of  Nooror Somany Steppe says, “We spent two years renovating the mansion, including replacing the roof. In doing so, I believe we brought a whole new source of life to the property that was much needed.” Walking around the mansion and the sumptuous gardens, one can’t help but admire its splendor, feel its history and wonder at how such a property could remain largely unused for such a long time.

Our own sensational meal focused on two set menus within the extensive a la carte selection of fabulous Royal Thai cuisine. Most recipes are centuries old and faithfully handed down through generations, while others are new, creative and unique variations on traditional themes, and all feature visually stunning dishes artistically presented with carved fruits and vegetables.

The set menus that we experiencing were the Parakan classic menu and Nooror’s very own Chef-selected menu paired with marvelous wines from the finest Old and New World vintners. These both present a broad array of classic Royal Thai cuisine and are a sensational way to sample many of the flavors, ingredients and cooking styles that make this genre of cuisine world-famous.

The service and setting were both overwhelmingly charming, and really this is one of the best experiences you can savor in Phuket whether you are visiting, or lucky enough to live here. Indeed, like the very name “Blue Elephant” everything about this evening was unique and highly-memorable.
