The Oriental Spoon’s New Menus

The stylish Oriental Spoon Restaurant within the graceful confines of Surin Beach’s Twinpalms Phuket has gained a global reputation for its amazing Sunday brunches. They pioneered the hedonistic pleasures of doing brunch in Phuket starting back in 2002 and have become the very epicenter of Phuket’s lazy Sunday afternoon chic …. the place to see and be seen whether you are a resident, or just visiting the island.

We were visiting the Oriental Spoon in early August to sample the new additions to their already extensive and refined Thai and modern European menu choices, and we were highly impressed.

Twinpalms is one of Phuket’s ultra-stylish boutique resorts famous for its beautiful architecture, design and layout abounding with natural greenery and the vaulting palms that give it its highly appropriate name. As you might expect from such a stylish resort, their Oriental Spoon restaurant is a welcoming indoor, or outside terraced space, which fairly buzzes with grace, attentive service and Chef Aung’s seductively tasty gastronomy.

The new menu additions are grouped into two specific experiential categories. The “Phuket Experience” selection features such local favorites as Som Tum Taad – grilled tiger prawns, beef jerky, dried squid, eggs and fresh veggies; Gai Song Kruang – deep fried chicken with delicious crunchy skin and brown sticky rice and fresh veggies; Roti Gaeng Pae – hot Thai herb curry and local goat meat, reflecting the strong Muslim influence in local cuisine; and perhaps most famous of all, Moo Hong– Phuket’s renowned pork belly stew with roti and dried shrimp.

All these lovely local dishes were complemented by the traditional starter Miang Kham which translates as a “one bite wrap”(food wrapped in leaves) featuring shallots, chili peppers, galangal, garlic, lime, tiny dried shrimps and chopped coconut and peanuts. In addition, a selection of brightly colored rice is brought to your table flavored with such treats as Jasmin, turmeric, pandanus and butterfly peas. It is all totally charming and authentically local Phuketian.

The second new menu additions are in the International Specialties camp and comprise such innovations as exceedingly tasty skewered pork served with slivers of fresh vegetables and spicy dipping sauce, and the star of the show as far as we were concerned, a huge swordfish covered in lemons, peppers, boiled cucumber and other fresh vegetables….  enough fresh healthy fish to serve a hungry family in fact!

All this plus a marvelous wine selection including many Old and New World stars available by the glass, meant that we enjoyed a simply marvelous evening with the Oriental Spoon’s new menu items which found us lingering long over a final salvo of apple tart and fresh coffee and actually rather reluctant to leave and journey home!
