Japanese Runner Champs in 11th Laguna Phuket International Marathon

Koji Nishizawa from Japan won the 11th Laguna Phuket International Marathon (2016LPIM) as the annual running festival took to the island’s roads. Recognized as Thailand’s 2nd largest marathon event and annually supported by Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), this year’s race is once again record-breaking, with over 6,000 participants from 54 countries competing on a variety of distance courses in an atmosphere of community fun and charity fund-raising.

Nishizawa finished the 42km marathon in a time of 02:37:53, leading a group of more than 1,400 runners in the marathon category by almost 10 minutes when Neil Pearson of Great Britain followed him in 02:47:16. The marathon category also saw last year’s champion Mario Maglinao of Philippines came in 3rd in 02:49:54, breaking his own time from last year (in 02:55:35.)

The women’s 42km race was won by Lany Cardona of Philippines in 03:23:00. Followed Cardona in 2nd place was Thailand’s Wilaiwan Kumpituk in 03:24:33 and Xiomara Templeton of the USA in 03: 31:10.

In the half marathon, largest race category with more than 1,700 runners competing, the winner is Richard Salano from Philippines, in 01:15:18. The women’s half-marathon was won by Vivian Tang from Singapore, in 01:27:11.  

On Saturday 4 June, first day of the 2-day run event, the pre-race press conference was held before the 10.5km category, with more than 1,400 runners competing, saw local strength when both men’s and women’s fields were won by Thais; Rattakarn Lamanee was first in 00:37:56 while the women’s field saw Wilaiwan Kumpituk the first finisher, in 00:41:49.

Dubbed “Run Paradise”, Laguna Phuket International Marathon aimed at offering the fun of running that is made available to runners of all ages and abilities by various categories including 2km kids run, 5km community run and walk, 10.5km run and the half-marathon (21km) and marathon (42km) for more serious runners.

Each year, thousands of runners from around the world will travel to Phuket to participate in this family-friendly run event. In addition to Thailand where most runners are from, the top 5 source countries are Malaysia, Singapore, China, Hong Kong and Japan.

Like every year, athletes booking their slots in Laguna Phuket’s 2016 marathon and Triathlon (this year scheduled for Sunday 20 November) are requested to raise funds through donations and sponsorships for the resort’s long established “Laguna Phuket Foundation” to operate its various charitable programmes.

Over the years, millions of baht was raised to fund such initiatives as local school renovation, survival swim, mobile learning centre and Seedlings programmes.
