Getting To Know : Chef Jonathan Bruell cooking with Romance at The Boathouse Kata Beach
Executive Chef Jonathan Bruell is a much-traveled man of passion and purpose where the fine art of cooking and making his dining audiences happy are concerned.
His resume reads like a James Michener culinary adventure through some of the finest venues, kitchens and countries in which to dine and to learn about the fine art of gastronomy. It all started in Rio De Janeiro in Brazil where Jonathan was born in 1962. He was then educated in the United Kingdom and Australia and says that his early years spent living in different parts of the globe with his family, imbued him with a love of adventure and romantic travel.
That goes some way to explaining his unfolding adventurous culinary career, which reads like a Boy’s Own World Guide to seeing the world while cooking at some of its finest venues!
Speaking French, German and Portuguese as well as his native English and cooking in modern Australian, European, Asian, South American and basic Arabic styles, Jonathan is a veritable Chef for all seasons and styles.
He has worked at the romantic Orient Express Observatory hotel and the iconic Seibel Pier One and Quay Grand Suites Hotels in Sydney, plus the Norfolk Hotel Saigon and the Raratongan Beach Resort in The Cook Islands.
If that weren’t exotic enough, the Gulf Hotel Bahrain and the Paradise Beach Hotel in Pussan South Korea have also tasted Jonathan’s marvelously romantic creations.
Cairo, Bermuda, Miringen Switzerland, London, Port Douglas and even Sheraton Cruises down the Nile have all been a part of the magical culinary voyage that brought Jonathan to the hallowed portals of the beautiful Boathouse sitting on the pristine sands of Kata Beach in southern Phuket last year.
Seated on the Boathouse’s impossibly romantic terrace while sipping a cool drink and watching the fabulous pyrotechnic sunset over little Poo Island, Kata Bay and the sparkling Andaman Sea, I asked Jonathan about his goals and objectives in his new role.
“I am driven by the opportunity of working with the dynamic team here at The Boathouse where my creative skills and hands-on approach are highly valued. I am looking forward to using my high personal standards of performance to take The Boathouse to the next level of culinary excellence.
” The Boathouse is rightly viewed as an icon of romantic gastronomy and culinary creativity, with a fabulous setting, brilliant staff and one of the region’s finest wine cellars. I hope my own talents can combine with such superb attributes to make The Boathouse even more famous than it already is, both to new audiences and to our legion of returning guests who have stayed and dined with us over our 29 year of history since we opened in 1989.”
Judging by the impact that Jonathan has already had during the recent High Season’s key events like Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year, not to mention the stunning new series of Boathouse Sunday brunches and Friday wine lunches, his romantic vision is already becoming well established.
The Boathouse Festival of Fine Food and Romance spon-sored by Piper-Heidsieck Champagne and featuring a Cannes Film Festival theme replete with Thai and international stars during June this year will be another opportunity to join Chef Jonathan on his ongoing voyage into the romantic possibilities of fine food and wine.
