Getting to know : Jay Penno

Jay Penno General Manager of Best Western Patong Beach

Tall and well-built, Jay Penno appears a little imposing when first you meet him. But as soon as you talk to this ex-world class snowboarder you realise he is the ultimate ‘people person’ and very much the heart of the Best Western Hotel in Patong.

How did you get into hotel management?
I grew up in a restaurant owning family in Melbourne so hospitality, food and beverage are in my blood. Like many Aussies I wanted to explore the world and at 20 headed off to Japan. I fell in love with the country, became an avid snowboarder and learned the language. I travelled the world snowboarding and worked, as an example, guiding helicopter snowboarding trips out of Queenstown New Zealand and in Val d’Isare in the French Alps.
An unfortunate boarding accident left me with spinal damage and I decided to get back into hospitality, working in food and beverage in hotels in the US. Deciding I liked the life I took my Advanced Diploma in Hotel Management.
I was working at a hotel in Papa New Guinea when a former colleague called me and offered me this position in Patong and so in June 2015 I arrived in Thailand for the first time.

How is Best Western Patong positioned in the market?
Situated in the heart of Phuket’s most exciting holiday destination, we offer stylish and affordable accommodation surrounded by the city’s top attractions. Patong Beach is a leisurely 10-minute stroll away and Jungceylon Shopping Centre and the nightlife district on Bangla Road are very close.
Our clean and contemporary rooms are elegantly furnished and feature flat screen televisions, refreshing rain showers and private balconies. We target 25 to 35-year-old singles and young families who want to kick back and relax at the rooftop pool with chic cabanas and refreshing drinks from
the pool bar, or dine at our trendy street-side Mana Restaurant which offers great local and international dishes. In summary, I would say we offer four-star luxury at three star prices.

What is your management style?
I am very much a ‘hands-on’ manager who believes that happy staff make for happy hotel guests. I am open and approachable and aim to be a teacher on the job for my staff and the always-present face of the hotel to my guests. I live next door and am always available 24/7.

What’s new for the high season?
We have recently opened a classic American-style BBQ and smokehouse, serving the finest slow-cooked meats, poultry and sea food. With those amazing aromas wafting into the heart of Patong, I think it will be irresistible!
