Markus Kaliss General Manager of Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa
Charismatic, dynamic and charming are three adjectives that apply equally well to Markus Kaliss the recently-appointed General Manager of the beautifully landscaped Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa and to the property itself. We caught up with him over afternoon tea in the resort’s beguiling coffee shop.
After four months in your new job, what are your feelings about Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa?
Without doubt this is one of the most fabulous properties in the portfolio of the global Hilton brand.
As a long-term member of the company and having worked for over 15 years in locations as diverse as China, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Maldives, I can happily attest to Hilton being both the most famous and fastest growing hotel brand in the world.
Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa is well known for its huge verdant grounds, ideal for families with children, meetings, conferences, weddings and independent travelers who are seeking a safe and healthy sanctuary away from the increasing hustle and bustle of big city life, and sadly even much of today’s Phuket. With five swimming pools, ten restaurants and bars, almost 700 suites and rooms in eight different types and sizes, and conference facilities catering for up to 1,200 guests including a Grand Ballroom and marquees, this resort truly does have everything for every type of guest. I can honestly say it is a great privilege to be managing such a hospitality gem and an iconic Hilton property.
What are your immediate plans for expansion and development?
With my new Executive Chef Robert Mujagic with whom I worked in the Maldives and our new F&B director joining in November, we are revamping menus and offerings in all of our ten F&B outlets. Our Ocean Beach Club overlooking Kata Beach, Sails poolside restaurant, famous for its Sunday brunches, Thai-Thai and Buon Appetito restaurants will all be upgraded and revamped with new menus.
Also the key to our success is delivering a superb guest experience and service values that are second to none, so we will continue to embellish these, particularly for emerging in-bound markets like India and the growing independent Chinese travel market, which are both huge and will continue to grow.
What is your style of management?
I pride myself on fostering the renowned Hilton people-centric style of management, where everyone is treated as a vital and important individual in our team. We believe that happy staff, who are well trained, motivated and rewarded, deliver the highest levels of warm guest care and attention for which the Hilton brand is globally famous.
In addition, we have a very strong ethos of environmental and sustainable development and of giving back to the local community and my role is to foster and nurture these important Hilton values in all of our team.
How do you keep looking so young and fit?
I have the privilege of walking around the resort’s wonderful verdant grounds and breathing all that lovely clean fresh air every morning. It’s a fabulous perk that goes with a fabulous job!
