Best Western Patong Beach signs young and fresh hospitality star – Tristan Kuehneisen
The young and talented new General Manager of Best Western Patong Beach has brought a wealth of experience and passion to the resort and is happy to share his story and vision for the new chapter of his career.
Please let us know more about your background
I was born in Germany to German and Indian parents. My father worked in German government’s Department of Foreign Affairs. When I was young I had incredible opportunities to travel the world and discover different countries and cultures, especially in Asia and Africa. It was normal for us to move to another country every three to six years, so I always had to make new friends quickly. This is probably what prepared me for a career in the hospitality industry!
In my career I have been fortunate to work in beautiful destinations like Vietnam, the Maldives, Bali and of course Thailand. Having spent the last eight years in the “Land of Smiles,” I have had the pleasure of working in Koh Samui, Bangkok and Phuket for companies such as Six Senses, Hilton and Hyatt. My background is in Food & Beverage, which I chose because of the human aspect; everyone loves to eat and it is such a pleasure to see how guests react to delicious food.
What is the uniqueness of Thai hospitality?
Thai hospitality is famous across the world for being friendly and heartwarming. Thai people have a very natural and comforting way of approaching people, which makes visitors feel wonderfully welcome. For hoteliers, this is such a fantastic trait to have; guests feel so at ease in Thailand that it starts to feel like their second home, and they return to the Kingdom time and again. Thailand has many amazing assets, but the warmth of its people is surely the most valuable.
What do you think is the benchmark for a being a good hotel leader?
A good leader needs to listen as well as talk. Effective communication is hugely important; it is not enough for a leader to be knowledgeable – they need to be able to share that knowledge with their team. But communication is a two-way process, and every leader needs to be able to listen to their team, understand their needs and ask their ideas. Most importantly, a good leader should lead by example.
What is your management strategy?
Leading by example and working together with your team is very important. The best way to learn is by helping each other; we need to be hands-on and share ideas, which will help us all grow stronger together. Training is also very important, of course; without effective training you cannot expect your team to meet and exceed the expectations of your guests.
